On June 23, 2011 – Prof. Michael Gooding, virologist of University of Kentucky (UKY) have visited Department of Agronomy and Horticulture (AGH), Faculty of Agriculture, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), Bogor, Indonesia. The purposes of his visit were to explore possible educational and research collaborations between UKY and IPB.
Dr. Gooding competence is utilizing protein-protein interactions to study plant-virus interaction. In one of his research activity, he has extensively used this approach to study how the nucleo-rhapdovirus (a negative strand RNA virus) replicate in plant cells and move from one plant cell to the others. He has used a number of fluorescent proteins to track down the interaction between virus and plant protein components, respectively.
During his visit to Dept. of AGH., Prof Gooding has met with a number of research and teaching staffs of this department and others. He also gave two seminars before staffs of Dept. of AGH and associated graduate (PhD and MSc.) students. The topic of his first seminar was sustainable biotechnology research and education and the second was plant-virus interactions His seminars have attracted a large number of graduate students associated with Dept. of AGH.
In his second presentation, he discussed mostly on the plant-virus interactions based on his groups finding about the plant and virus protein-protein interactions, respectively. He also discussed that development of resistance mechanisms against plant viruses based on his group findings are possible.
Prof. Gooding has enlightened Dept. of AGH staffs and graduate students with very comprehensive and mind opening presentations. All PMB Lab staffs and associated graduate students appreciated very much for the opportunity to listen to Prof. Gooding seminars. We hope that this visit will not be the last and there will be many more visit to Dept. of AGH. in the future.
