On Wednesday July 20, 2011, Prof. Julian Adams visited Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), Bogor, Indonesia. Prof. Adams is Professor and Chair of the Department of Biology, The University of Michigan, Michigan, USA. He is also an Asia Representative of Program for Biosafety Systems (PBS), International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). He was accompanied by Mr. Sidi Asmono, the Indonesian Country Coordinator of PBS.
Prof. Adams introduced to the staff members of Biotechnology Lab, Department of Agronomy and Horticulture what is the PBS and its focus activities. The Program for Biosafety Systems (PBS) is an IFPRI-managed program that supports partner countries in Africa and Asia in the responsible development and safe use of agricultural biotechnology. PBS effectively addresses biosafety through an integrated program of research, capacity development, and outreach. PBS is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Prof Adams also discussed possible future collaboration between PBS and the staff members of Biotechnology Lab, Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, especially in the areas of academic activities related to Agricultural Biotechnology. He offered to Department of Agronomy and Horticulture his expertise in addressing biosafety issues, in case there is any need from this department staffs. He and his team also willing to address undergraduate and graduate students of this department about Agricultural Biotechnology and Biosafety of biotechnology products.
Attending the meeting with Prof. Julian Adams were: Dr. Agus Purwito (Head of Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, IPB), Dr. Darda effendi, Dr. Dewi Sukma, Mrs. Megayani Sri Rahayu, MS., Dr. Ni Made Armini Wiendi, Dr. Nurul Khumaida, Dr. Sintho Wahyuning Adie, Prof. Sudarsono, and Prof. GA. Wattimena. After more than two hours discussion, the meeting was closed by lunch gathering with staffs of Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, IPB.
PMB Lab staffs and associated graduate students wish Prof. Julian Adams a pleasant stay in Bogor. We hope that he will pay a visit to this department in other occasions.
