Diversity of Endosperm Quality among Kalianda Tall Kopyor Coconut

ABSTRACT

 Kalianda sub-district, Lampung Selatan, Lampung is one of the known locations where Tall Kopyor Coconuts native to Indonesia are existed. Kalianda Tall Kopyor Coconuts are found and concentrated in three locations, namely: Desa Agom Jaya, Desa Kecapi and Desa Palembapang. Characterization and provenance registration of the Kalianda Tall Kopyor Coconut have just been conducted in the early 2011.  The objective of this research was to register the existence of Kalianda Tall Kopyor Coconut and evaluate the diversity of endosperm quality among Kopyor coconut fruits harvested from the existing Kopyor coconut provenances. Registration and observation were conducted by mapping using GPS. The existence of Kopyor coconut provenances were proven by harvesting coconut fruits and observing the present of Kopyor phenotypes. Observations of the Kopyor fruit endosperm quality were done by opening coconut shell and scoring the observed endosperm. Endosperm quality was scored using scoring value ranged from 0 to 10, based on the previously developed standard. Results of the observation showed that in the first site, Desa Agom Jaya, there were 100 of ‘Kopyor’ coconut provenance among a total of 282 coconut populations. In the second site, Desa Palem Bapang, there were 69 of ‘Kopyor’ coconut provenance among total of 134 coconut populations. Meanwhile in the third site, Desa Kecapi, there were 116 of ‘Kopyor’ coconut provenance among total of 658 coconut populations. Based on the limited number of fruits observed, the endosperm of Kopyor coconut was very diverse. The Kopyor coconuts with endosperm quality scores ranged from 1 to 9 were observed. The score of endosperm quality seemed to be parental genotype dependence. Complete report on the proposed scoring systems for endosperm quality of Kalianda Tall Kopyor coconut will be presented.
