International collaboration can be in different forms. The most common forms are research collaborations and staff exchanges.
Another example of international collaboration can also be in the form of external examination for PhD Student from other countries. In Malaysia, before it can go ahead to final examination, dissertation of a PhD student need to be evaluated by external examiner. Once the external examiner concluded that the dissertation document is suitable for PhD degree, only then the final exam be conducted.
Prof. Sudarsono of PMB Lab, Department of Agronomy and Horticulturture (AGH), Faculty of Agriculture, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) was recently appointed as external examiner for PhD student from University Putra Malaysia (UPM), Malaysia. The student’s name was Alireza Bahraminejad, who is from Iran. The title of his dissertation is “Genetic Diversity of Cummin in Iran as Determined by Molecular, Biochemical and Morphological Markers.”
After completing his task as external examiner, Prof. Sudarsono noted that becoming external examiner was a challenging work. The dissertation document is written in English and the external examiner should restrain from making extensive correction of the document. Once completing the task, however, it was such a fulfilling appointment.
All PMB Lab staffs and associated graduate students hope that this first activity between UPM, Malaysia and PMB Lab, Department Agronomy and Horticulture (AGH), Faculty of Agriculture, IPB – Bogor continues in the future. We hope that more interaction between UPM and IPB will be realized.
