Renni Indrayanti of Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ) has finally completed her PhD (S3) program at Plant Breeding and Biotechnology (PBT) Major, Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, School of Graduate Program, IPB-Bogor. She took her final PhD Open Examination in December 20,
2011. Renni Indrayanti has successfully been able to answer all inquiries from the team of PhD Open Examiners about her dissertation research. The team of examiners consisted of Dr. Catur Hermanto (The director of Tropical Fruit Research Institute, Solok), Prof. GA. Wattimena (Emmeritus Professor of IPB), Prof. Sudarsono (Chairman of PhD supervisory committee [SC]), Prof. Nurhayati A. Mattjik (Member of PhD SC), Dr. Asep Setiawan (Member of PhD SC), and Dr. Tri Kusumaningtyas (Coordinator of PBT Major), and Prof. Nahrowi (School of Graduate Program, IPB).
Her PhD dissertation research was about developing Fusarium oxysporum fsp. cubense (Foc) resistance banana cv. Ampyang through induced mutation and in vitro selection. In some part of her dissertation research, she gamma irradiated in vitro shoot of banana cv. Ampyang, proliferated the irradiated shoots for 10 months and exposed the shoots into selective media containing culture filtrate of Foc (Foc CF). Subsequently, she identified the Foc CF insensitive variants, transfer the plantlets to soil and challenged the surviving seedlings with two isolate of Foc. At the end of her experiments, she was able to identify a number of variants that were resistance against Foc infection both under the controlled conditions and in the field. She also did phenotypic evaluations on some of the variants to find out whether the variants produced normal fruits.
Finally, after answering many questions, inquiries, and confirmations from all examiners, Renni Indrayanti was declared successful in defending her PhD dissertation research. After completing all the administrative requirements and do a number of suggested revisions for her dissertation document, she will be granted a PhD degree.
All PMB Lab staffs and associated graduate students congratulate Renni Indrayanti for her success in completing the PhD Open Examination. We hope that she will soon complete all of the administrative requirements and the necessary PhD dissertation revisions.
