Surti Kurniasih – a PhD (S3) candidate associated with PMB Lab, IPB and a staff at Biology Major, FKIP, Universitas Pakuan, Bogor-INDONESIA took her first round of PhD examination (closed PhD exam) in January 19, 2012. After answering a number of inquiries, questions, and confirmations from six members of team examiners, Surti Kurniasih finally passed her closed PhD exam.
Surti Kurniasih had to defend her PhD dissertation before two advisory committees (Prof. Sudarsono [chairman] and Dr. Agus Purwantara [member]. The third member of advisory committee [Dr. Asep Setiawan] could not attend the examination because he was abroad), two examiners (Dr. Sintho Wahyuning Ardie and Dr Dewi Sukma), a representative from Agronomy Graduate Program (Dr. Darda Effendi) and from Faculty of Agriculture office (Prof. Dadang).
Surti Kurniasih dissertation research title is: “Genetic Diversity Analysis Using SSR Marker and Isolation of RGA/DGA marker for Phytophthora palmivora Resistance in Cacao.” In her dissertation research activities, Surti Kurniasih has: (1) evaluated morphological characters variability of 22 cacao clones and analyze their genetic diversity using SSR markers; (2) Analyze association between allele variability among five cacao clones, their F1 progeny, and their resistance against Phytophthora palmivora (black pod disease); and (3) Isolate RGA/DGA fragment from cacao genome and develop gene specific primers based on the sequences.
Surti Kurniasih is one step closer in getting her PhD degree from IPB. However, she has to do a major revision for her PhD dissertation document before she will be allowed to take her open PhD exam (second phase of final PhD examination). She has only ten days to do the revision and hopefully will be able to take his open PhD exam in January 31, 2012.
All PMB Lab staffs and associated students congratulate Surti Kurniasih for his success. We hope that she will be able to complete the suggested revisions for her dissertation as soon as possible and get it ready for the last step.
