Meynarti Sari Dewi Ibrahim (Right - a PhD. student at Biotechnology Major, IPB) completed her first PhD (S3) committee meeting to discuss her plans for PhD (S3) dissertation research. Her plans dissertation research title is "Induced Variability among Plantlets of Coffee Regenerated from Somatic Embryos and Identification of Leaf Rust Disease (Hemileia vastatrix) Resistant Variants."

Meynarti Sari Dewi Ibrahim – A PhD. (S3) Student of Plant Breeding and Biotechnology Major, Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, School of Graduate Study, IPB, Bogor-Indonesia, met her PhD. (S3) advisory committee for the first time on Friday, January 20-2012. In that meeting, Meynarti has presented her research plans for the PhD. (S3) dissertation and discussed the detail of their implementation with her supervisory committee members.

Members of her PhD. (S3) supervisory committee are Prof. Sudarsono of PMB Lab., IPB (Chairman), Dr. Agus Purwito (member) and Dr. Rubiyo (member). The title of Meynarti’s PhD. (S3) dissertation research will be: “Induced Variability among Plantlets of Coffee Regenerated from Somatic Embryos and Identification of Leaf Rust Disease (Hemileia vastatrix) Resistant Variants.”

In her research plan, she will develop coffee seedlings originated from somatic embryos of coffee (Coffea arabica). Subsequently, she will evaluate the occurrence of somaclonal coffee variants among regenerated seedlings using SSR markers. The regenerated coffee variants will be challenged with Hemileia vastatrix to evaluate their resistance against coffee leaf rust disease.

The purposes of Meynarti PhD. (S3) dissertation research are to evaluate the existence and extent of somaclonal variation among coffee seedlings regenerated from somatic embryos and to find coffee seedling variants that are resistance to Hemileia vastatrix. Hemileia vastatrix is the pathogen causing leaf rust disease in coffee, causing restriction in growing certain coffee especially at middle and low altitudes.

The first advisory committee meeting run well and the advisory committee members have proposed some suggestions to improve Meynarti’s plan for her PhD. (S3) research. Subsequently, she need to revised the PhD. (S3) dissertation research proposal and prepare for the research proposal seminar. She also need to submit the revised proposal document as one of the administrative requirements for student at PBT Major. The other more important matters are to carry out the research plan and generate enough data for her dissertation.

All PMB Lab staffs and associated graduate students congratulate Meynarti Sari Dewi Ibrahim for finishing her first PhD. (S3) advisory committee meeting. We hope that she will be able to complete all administrative matters and generate all the necessary data for her PhD. (S3) dissertation.
