Oftentimes in a discussion with colleagues in the scientific meeting, I heard someone make a statement like that stated below in our casual conversation. In a round table discussion, one of the participant (lets assume it is “si-A”) commented on the other colleague presentation: “Well, my lab and I have done all of those research topics in those particular crops many years ago.” He said that with a sense of pride in his voice and cockiness in his face. The point that those colleagues want to say was they have done that research first and long before the on-going discussion.
The facts were they did some experiments about the same or similar research works. The experiments have been done a few years back. However, results of the experiments were only end up as research reports sitting in the bookshelf. The results of the studies have never been published anywhere in scientific journals nor presented in scientific meetings.
Based on the points above, was “si-A’s” claimed that he and his group have done the research valid? Or was it invalid? Well, the answer was not just an easy “YES” or “NO.” Before you decide the answer, lets consider the following statements:
- “The finish points of research and scientific activities are Publication in Scientific Journals or other available media for disseminating the collected findings.” Anyone engaging in research activities are morally responsible to disseminate ones research results and write scientific publications. It is not enough to execute and conduct research and scientific works and write annual research reports. In this case, the principal investigator (PI) have never written any publication out of their research results
- “If you want to be a scientist, you have to publish.” Anyone who are working in scientific world or who want to be scientists, then you all have to publish your scientific activities in scientific journals or other available media. It is not enough for scientists or wanna be scientists to do just research works and activities. It is not enough for them to just write annual report of their work and activities every end of the year. They need to write scientific publication.
Back to the statement at the beginning of this posting, about the phrases “I have done that research for that crops several years ago.” If the Project PI have never published his works, then he actually has never finished his research works. Therefore, any one else who actually do the same or similar works and eventually published the findings – he would claim the glory.
I would like to stress the importance of publishing scientific activities in the form of scientific publications. By writing the publications, you complete and close the cycle of your scientific activities. Moreover, by publishing the scientific activities in scientific journals, you fulfill your role as part of scientific communities.
To end this writing, I hope that this opinions could have added values to all of us. Lets pump our spirit to publish in an ethically correct way. Happy writing and good luck…!
